Image Compressor

An image compressor makes photos and graphics smaller in file size while keeping them looking the same. This one runs entirely in your browser: choose a quality level or a target such as 100 KB, optionally resize or convert to WebP, and download the results. Your images are never uploaded to a server.

Most web pages never show images wider than 1600–2000 px.

How to compress an image

  1. Add your images. Drop up to 30 JPG, PNG or WebP files onto the box, or tap it to choose from your device. Compression starts straight away.
  2. Pick quality or a size limit. Use quality for general use, or switch to target file size when a form or website has a maximum, such as 100 KB.
  3. Resize and convert if needed. Set a maximum width to shrink large photos, and choose WebP for the smallest files on websites.
  4. Download. Check the before and after sizes, then download each image or all of them at once.

How image compression works

Lossy compression (JPG and WebP) throws away fine detail the eye barely notices, such as tiny colour variations in a blue sky. At 70–80% quality most photos look identical to the original at a fraction of the size. Lossless compression (PNG) keeps every pixel exactly, so it suits screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or transparency, but it shrinks photos much less.

The biggest savings usually come from resizing. A 4000 × 3000 phone photo has 12 million pixels; if it will only ever be shown 1600 pixels wide, resizing removes over 80% of the pixels before compression even starts.

Which format should I use?

FormatBest forTransparencyTypical size
JPGPhotos, email attachments, maximum compatibilityNoSmall
WebPWebsites and appsYesSmallest: Google measured 25–34% smaller than JPG at the same quality
PNGScreenshots, logos, text, line artYesLarge for photos, small for flat graphics

WebP is supported by all current browsers, so it is a safe choice for websites. For email attachments, printing or older software, JPG is still the most compatible.

How to compress an image to 100KB (or any size)

Searches for “compress image to 100KB” usually come from someone filling in a form. Many job portals, visa and exam application forms, and email systems set a maximum file size. Switch to target file size and enter the limit, for example 100 KB, 200 KB or 1 MB. The tool searches for the highest quality that fits under the limit. If even the lowest quality is too big, it reduces the dimensions step by step until the file fits, and tells you if it could not reach the target.

Forms that also need exact pixel dimensions (such as passport photos) should be resized to those dimensions first using the max-width option.

Reduce image size for a faster website

Images are often the heaviest part of a web page, and the largest image in view is frequently the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element that Google uses in its Core Web Vitals. Smaller images load faster on mobile connections, use less data and can improve search performance.

  • Resize to the largest size the image will be displayed at (around 1600–2000 px wide for a full-width hero).
  • Use WebP at 70–80% quality.
  • Aim for under 200 KB for large images and well under 100 KB for thumbnails.

Compress JPEG files without uploading them

Most online compressors upload your files to a server, process them there and send them back. This tool uses your browser’s built-in image engine instead, so photos never leave your device. It even works if you go offline after the page has loaded. Compressed files also have their EXIF metadata removed, including the GPS location many phones store in photos, which is good for privacy when you share images publicly.

Image compressor FAQs

Will compressing reduce image quality?

Lossy formats discard some detail, but at 70–80% quality the difference is very hard to see on screen. Keep your original file if you might need to print it large or edit it later.

Why is my compressed PNG not much smaller?

PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does not apply. To shrink a PNG photo a lot, convert it to JPG or WebP, or resize it.

Is there a file size or number limit?

You can compress up to 30 images at a time. Very large images (over about 50 megapixels) may be slow or fail on phones with limited memory.

Are my images uploaded or stored?

No. All processing happens in your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers.

Does it keep the photo's orientation?

Yes. Phone photos are rotated according to their EXIF orientation before compression, so they stay the right way up.

Sources and methodology

Images are decoded with createImageBitmap (respecting EXIF orientation), drawn to an HTML canvas at the chosen size and re-encoded with canvas.toBlob at the chosen quality. Target-size mode binary-searches quality over seven steps and, if needed, scales dimensions down by 15% per round. If the result is larger than the original in the same format and size, the original file is kept. Transparent areas are filled with white when converting to JPG.
