Paycheck Calculator 2026 (US Federal)

A paycheck calculator estimates take-home pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and pre-tax deductions. On a $75,000 salary, a single filer paid biweekly in 2026 takes home about $2,368.94 per paycheck, or $61,593 a year, before any state or local income tax.

How to use this salary after tax calculator

  1. Enter your pay. Type your yearly salary, or switch to hourly and add your usual weekly hours.
  2. Choose filing status and pay frequency. Pick the status you file under and how often you are paid. Biweekly means 26 paychecks a year; semi-monthly means 24.
  3. Add 401(k) and pre-tax benefits. Enter your traditional 401(k) or 403(b) percentage and any health, HSA or FSA deductions taken before tax.
  4. Add your state rate. Enter an approximate state income tax rate, or leave it at zero if your state has none.

What comes out of a US paycheck

  • Federal income tax: charged on taxable income after the standard deduction and pre-tax contributions.
  • Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500.
  • Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single or head of household) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).
  • State and local income tax: varies from nothing in states such as Texas and Florida to more than 10% at the top rate in California.
  • Pre-tax deductions: traditional 401(k) contributions reduce federal income tax but not Social Security or Medicare; Section 125 health premiums reduce both.

2026 federal income tax brackets

The IRS adjusted the brackets and standard deduction for inflation for 2026. Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band’s rate.

Federal income tax calculator: a worked example

A single filer earning $75,000 with no pre-tax deductions:

  1. Taxable income = $75,000 − $16,100 standard deduction = $58,900.
  2. 10% on the first $12,400 = $1,240.
  3. 12% on the next $38,000 (up to $50,400) = $4,560.
  4. 22% on the remaining $8,500 = $1,870.
  5. Federal income tax = $7,670, an effective rate of 10.2% of gross pay.

Add Social Security of $4,650 and Medicare of $1,087.50 and the take-home is $61,592.50 a year, or $2,368.94 every two weeks.

Take-home pay on common salaries (single filer, 2026)

Federal taxes only, biweekly pay, no 401(k), no state tax:

SalaryFederal taxSocial Security + MedicareTake-home per yearPer paycheck
$40,000$2,620$3,060$34,320$1,320.00
$50,000$3,820$3,825$42,355$1,629.04
$60,000$5,020$4,590$50,390$1,938.08
$75,000$7,670$5,738$61,593$2,368.94
$100,000$13,170$7,650$79,180$3,045.38
$150,000$24,734$11,475$113,791$4,376.58

Filing status makes a big difference: the same $75,000 leaves $64,623 for a married couple filing jointly and $63,515 for a head of household.

Using it as an hourly paycheck calculator

Switch the pay type to hourly and the calculator multiplies your rate by your weekly hours and 52 weeks. At $25 an hour for 40 hours a week ($52,000 a year), a single filer takes home about $1,690.85 every two weeks before state tax.

Overtime, tips and bonuses are not included. Bonuses are often withheld at a flat 22% federal rate, which can make a bonus paycheck look smaller than your regular one even though the final tax owed is the same.

How a 401(k) changes your net pay calculator result

Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before federal income tax. On a $75,000 salary, saving 6% ($4,500 a year) cuts federal tax by about $990, so take-home pay falls by $3,510, not the full $4,500. Many employers also add a matching contribution that does not show on your paycheck at all.

Roth 401(k) contributions are taken after tax, so if you use a Roth leave the 401(k) box at zero and treat the contribution as part of your spending instead.

Paycheck calculator FAQs

How much is $75,000 a year after taxes?

For a single filer in 2026 with no pre-tax deductions, $75,000 is about $61,593 a year after federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, or $2,368.94 per biweekly paycheck. State and local income tax would reduce that further.

Why doesn't my paycheck match exactly?

Your employer withholds based on your W-4 and the IRS withholding tables, which spread tax evenly over the year. Extra withholding, dependents claimed on your W-4, credits, other income and local taxes all change the figure.

Does this include state income tax?

Only as a flat estimate you enter. States use different brackets, deductions and credits, so check your state’s revenue department for an exact figure.

Are tax credits like the Child Tax Credit included?

No. Credits reduce the tax you owe when you file, and you can account for them on your W-4 to raise each paycheck. This calculator shows withholding before credits.

What is the 401(k) limit for 2026?

$24,500 for employee elective deferrals. Workers aged 50 or over can add an $8,000 catch-up contribution, and those aged 60 to 63 can add up to $11,250. The calculator applies the standard $24,500 cap.

Sources and methodology

Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deductions published by the IRS (Rev. Proc. 2025-32), applied to gross pay minus traditional 401(k) contributions (capped at $24,500), Section 125 pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% plus 0.9% above the filing-status threshold. State tax is a flat percentage of wages after pre-tax deductions. Results are annual amounts divided by the number of paychecks. All example figures were produced by this calculator.
